My goal is to genetically modify the coral symbiont zooxanthellae to resist the increasing temperatures of the ocean and prevent further bleaching. Often times, bleachings will leave coral reefs damaged, and in some instances they can even result in the death of entire reef system.
There have been five mass extinctions on the planet earth, each preceded by the death of a coral reef. In the past 15 years, 30% of the world's coral reefs have perished and another 6% are expected to die in the next two years. It is predicted that the Great Barrier Reef will become a geological relic in 27 years.
